    Today in the News:
    – The US boosts defences over Korea threat
    – Conn. governor is signing a tough new gun control law
    – and Lance Armstrong plans his competitive comeback, this time as a swimmer

Are we seriously approaching the possibility of a nuclear strike in our modern age? What is wrong with us people?! The US is sending a missile shield to the Pacific island of Guam as North Korea threatens nuclear strikes. The Pentagon said the shield would be ready within weeks, adding to warships that were sent to the area earlier. North Korea has issued an array of statements in recent weeks threatening nuclear strikes and attacks on specific targets in the US and South Korea, using “smaller, lighter and diversified” nuclear weapons, which could be a bluff of course…But it is reported that North Korea has moved a missile with “considerable range” to its east coast, so when it comes to nuclear threats I think the rule of thumb should be better safe than sorry.

In response to last year’s deadly school shooting in Newtown, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy today will be signing a wide-ranging bill that includes new restrictions on weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines. The December massacre, which reignited a national debate on gun control, set the stage for changes in the state that may have been impossible in a different state. The legislation adds more than 100 firearms to the state’s assault weapons ban, and creates what officials have called the nation’s first dangerous weapon offender registry as well as eligibility rules for buying ammunition. Some parts of the bill would take effect immediately after Malloy’s signature, including background checks for all firearms sales. Connecticut will join states including California, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts in having the country’s strongest gun control laws.

You can take his bike away, you can take his seven tour de france gold medals away, but you can’t stop him from jumping in the water headfirst, quite literally, and swim his way to glory. Disgraced American cyclist Lance Armstrong is planning to return to competitive sport, and this time as a swimmer. Armstrong, has entered the Masters South Central Zone Swimming Championships in Texas this weekend, compete in freestyle races over 500 yards, 1,000 yards and 1,650 yards at the event held in his home city of Austin.
He is able to compete as US Masters Swimming events are not subject to USA or World Anti-Doping Agency codes. This man’s spirit is unbreakable, but please no doping this time Lance! Oprah is watching you.
